• Description

One of the best selections of Magnolia virginiana to date, ‘Green Shadow’ originated as a chance seedling under the stewardship of Don Shadow. A more upright form than the species, ‘Green Shadow’ has the cleanest foliage of any variety, and is one of the most cold hardy, with purported leaf retention even down to -15 degrees. The flowers are a pure white and have a delightful though not overwhelming lemony fragrance from early to late summer. As fall nears green to pink cone-like fruits split open to reveal bright red arils (like the seeds in a pomegranate) that are enjoyed not just for color, but by seed eating songbirds looking to pack on the pounds as winter approaches. Matures at 30’. Hardy to Zone 4.
