Ichiyo
-

Description
The ugly duckling of the Thunbergii clan, ’Ichiyo’ is a noticeable upright grower with striking dark green needles that are significantly longer than many selections, 4-6" to be exact, giving one the perception of a framework encased in porcupine quills. As many horticultural professionals are aware, pines are classified based on the number of needles per bundle, but ’Ichiyo’ throws many into a tailspin upon introduction, as at first glance it appears to have a single large dark green needle per fascicle. But do not be deceived, as upon further observation it is revealed that these individual needles are actually several needles fused together as one single unit. A specimen piece rarely seen in most collections, this salt tolerant selection would make a stunning architectural piece at any arboretum or seaside beach house. ’Ichiyo’ matures 20’ and is hardy to Zone 5.
