'Nishiki Gawa' features rough, coarsely fissured, cork-textured bark that provides year round interest. Sometimes sold under the common name pine bark maple, the showy bark develops after 2-3 years and is said to resemble the bark of Japanese black pines. The palmate foliage is light green in color with red petioles and will turn shades of yellow and red in the fall. Small, red flowers bloom in spring and are followed by samaras, both of which are not ornamentally significant. Mature plants will reach up to 15' tall with a rounded to slightly spreading, dense, 15' wide canopy.
